​According to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code of Alberta, it’s the employer’s responsibility to implement an Alberta occupational health and safety program to prevent employee workplace injury and disease in the construction industry. This ensures that the employer is exercising due diligence in taking steps to meet with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code of Alberta. Employers in the construction industry with 20 or more workers must have a formal health and safety program manual that is developed in consultation with the joint work site health and safety committee or representative.

​Employers with fewer than 20 workers must have an informal safety program manual in place and have documentation in place that meets the requirements established by the OHS legislation. This includes assessment and control of workplace hazards and an emergency response plan. The employer must also consult with the health and safety representative.​
