What are Canada's occupational health and safety regulations and act requirements for all businesses?

All businesses in every Province across Canada, are required by provincial occupational health and safety regulations & legislation to ensure an effective OHS occupational health and safety program is developed and implemented for their employees. The first step towards developing an occupational health and safety program for your small, mid-size or large business in Canada is to develop a written health and safety manual which includes the proper safety procedures and policies pertaining to your business and in compliance with the provincial health and safety regulations. Our OHS manuals will be the foundation of your overall health and safety program in the form of written policies and procedures; along with usable forms to ensure your company's due diligence. Failure to comply with provincial OHS safety regulations in Canada, can result in very expensive and hefty fines, penalties, sanctions and/or stop work orders by local government enforcement safety officers.

BRITISH COLUMBIA
In British Columbia, Canada, applicable health and safety act regulations requires all small and large businesses (employers) by law to ensure an effective occupational health and safety program manual has been developed and implemented for their workers. Non-compliance with these regulations can result in hefty fines, penalties, sanctions or stop work orders by local WorkSafeBC enforcement officers. Our occupational health and safety program templates have been professionally designed by experienced consultants to be utilized by businesses across British Columbia, BC and which can be used for any industry. According to the Workers Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation in BC (WorksafeBC), all large employers in BC must have a 'formal' health and safety program manual developed and implemented if you have either a workforce of 20 or more workers and at least one workplace where there is a moderate or high risk of injury and when you have a workforce of 50 or more workers. Small businesses or employers with fewer than 20 workers need a written health and safety program too. These OHS program manuals can be simpler. They are referred to as "informal" health and safety programs.

ALBERTA
According to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code of Alberta, it’s the employer’s responsibility to implement an occupational health and safety (OHS) program to prevent employee workplace injury and disease. This ensures that the employer is exercising due diligence in taking steps to meet with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code of Alberta. Employers with 20 or more workers must have a formal health and safety program that is developed in consultation with the joint work site health and safety committee or representative. Employers with fewer than 20 workers must have an informal program in place and have documentation in place that meets the requirements established by the OHS legislation. This includes assessment and control of workplace hazards and an emergency response plan. The employer must consult with the health and safety representative.

NOVA SCOTIA
An organization’s occupational health and safety program contains the elements that make it possible to realize its policy objectives. Each program will be unique to the company that develops it, but some elements are needed to make them comply with the laws and to meet general health and safety standards in Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Workforce Development adheres to a policy it calls the Internal Responsibility System, which means that, while managers and supervisors have significant responsibility for workplace safety, individual employees also share in that responsibility. The Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act states that employers, contractors, and constructors who regularly employ five or more people must develop an occupational health and safety policy. An organization regularly employing 20 or more employees must develop an written occupational health and safety program.

All businesses in Northwest Territories, no matter the size, need to maintain a safe workplace and operate according to the NT Safety Act and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations. An OHS program promotes the philosophy of Internal Responsibility System (IRS) on which the Northwest Territories base the Safety Act and OHS Regulations. Everyone is responsible for safety in the workplace. Each person has roles and responsibilities that fit their position in the business. As the owner, you must do everything you can to provide a safe workplace. Supervisors must know and communicate all the hazards and hazard controls to all workers, and train workers on safe work procedures.
