​COURSE TOPICS
In this course, participants will learn:
​
  • The purpose of the Alberta OHS legislation and its three parts.
  • The roles and responsibilities of various work site parties and their OHS obligations.
  • The key roles and responsibilities that an employer must understand and meet.
  • How to establish and support an HSC or HSR.
  • The expectations and duties of an HSC or HSR.
  • The importance of work site inspections, including what is required, how to prepare for and perform the inspection, and how to communicate the results.
  • The purpose and procedure of incident reporting and investigation.
  • The requirements for prevention of workplace violence and harassment.
  • The terminology of committee meetings.
  • The criteria for effective committee meetings.
  • How to maintain an effective Health & Safety
  • Program and measure its effectiveness.

Interactive learning activities throughout the course are designed to explore key concepts in more detail. 2 of these 9 activities must be completed to meet the requirements of the course and are included in the 6-hour duration.

Work Site Parties
  • Identify your work site party role and obligations.

Expectations of the Employer
  • Key considerations when creating a Health &
  • Safety Management System (HSMS).
  • Seek out information about your HSC.

Expectations of the HSC/HSR
  • Hazard Assessment in your organization: Identify
  • high risk areas.
  • Your HSC/HSR processes and training.

Work Site Inspections
  • Perform an site safety inspection.

Being Effective
  • Determine committee structure.
  • HSC recommendation template.
  • Meeting minutes review.

This course is designed to take approximately 6 to 8 hours to complete, in accordance with Alberta Labour requirements. The course is self-paced and can be stopped and restarted as needed.

Testing included in this online course is intended to reinforce the learning objectives and fulfill the requirements of the mandatory training for HSC co-chairs and HSRs.  A mark of 80% must be achieved in order to pass the course.  Participants can repeat the final exam twice more if the pass mark is not achieved, for a total of 3 attempts. 

​To successfully complete the course, participants must indicate which two interactive activities were completed and must achieve 80% on the final exam. Upon successful completion of this online course, an AMHSA Certificate of Completion will be available to download and print. This course is recommended to be retaken every 3 years from the course completion date indicated on the certificate.
